Good Friday Procession

Good Friday Procession

Kraak! Good Friday in Procida is not just a tradition: it’s a deep breath that moves through the entire island. The Procession is coordinated by the Confraternity of the Turchini, also known as the Immaculate Conception, founded in 1629 by the Jesuit fathers. All participants wear a white robe with a blue mozzetta, a short mantle flowing like the sea in the early morning.

Criii! In the square in front of the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, the eldest confraternity member performs the “call”, summoning each participant in a precise order. Have you ever witnessed a silence heavier than the wind?

Squa-squa! At the head of the procession are the Mysteries: large artistic panels created every year by locals in the months leading up to Good Friday, traditionally in the doorways of the historic center — and today also in dedicated structures. They depict scenes from the Old Testament and the Gospel, passed down like a route that never fades.

Kraak! The procession begins with the sound of a trumpet, followed by three drum beats. An ancient signal once used for those condemned to death. A sound that cuts through the air like an unstoppable current.

Criii! Then come the Mysteries, the religious statues, the powerful figures of the Dead Christ — from the 18th century, created by Carmine Lantriceni — and the Sorrowful Virgin from the 19th century. Following them are the pallium — a funeral canopy — the island band playing funeral marches, the authorities, and finally the people. Everything flows like a long wave across the island.

Squa-squa! Right after the Sorrowful Virgin come the little angels: very young children, up to 2 years old, dressed in black with gold embroidery, as a sign of mourning, similar to the Virgin’s attire. A delicate image that lingers, like sunlight on calm water.

Kraak! The Procession of the Mysteries ends in Piazza Marina Grande. Then the statues of Christ and the Sorrowful Virgin return to the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, where in the early afternoon the Agony service is held. Have you ever felt an entire island move like a single boat?
