Kraak! If you find yourself in Procida on May 8th, get ready… this is no ordinary day. It’s the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, our Patron Saint, the one who protects the island like a reef shields boats from rough seas.

It all goes back to a moment no one here has ever forgotten. It was 1535, when raiders led by the Corsair Barbarossa — pirates ready to plunder the island — landed on Procida. They were already near the gate of the citadel, just steps away from entering its heart.

Criii! And right there, something extraordinary happened: the promontory of Terra Murata — the highest and oldest part of the island — was suddenly surrounded by fire, with lightning and thunder shaking the sky like a sudden storm at sea.

Terrified, the invaders fled in panic, rushing back to the sea so quickly they didn’t even lift their anchors. Have you ever seen a retreat like that? For everyone here, it was clear: this was the supernatural intervention of Saint Michael.

Squa-squa! Since that day, the devotion to Saint Michael has been woven into the life of Procida, like fishermen’s nets that tangle but never break.

During the celebration, the statue of the Saint — made of silver and enriched with offerings from the faithful — is carried in a procession from the Abbey of Terra Murata through the streets of the historic center. A journey you can almost feel in the air.

Kraak! And did you know this festival brings people back from far away? Many Procida natives from France return, from La Ciotat and Marseille, carrying the island in their hearts like a compass always pointing home.

Since the mid-1900s, many islanders had moved for work to Mers-el-Kébir in Algeria. Mostly fishermen, true people of the sea, who carried with them their love for Procida and their deep devotion to Saint Michael.

Criii! Even today, they come back every year for the Feast of Saint Michael. They return for the religious celebrations, for the processions, to reconnect with their roots.

Squa-squa! If you’re here during those days, follow the celebration, let it carry you… because this is not just a festival. It’s the heartbeat of Procida, and you can feel it up close.
