San Giuseppe

Kraak! In Marina Chiaiolella, along Via Giovanni da Procida, you’ll find a place that looks out toward the sea: the Church of San Giuseppe, now a Sanctuary. Here, the air carries the scent of salt and stories travel with the wind.
Criii! The church was built in the 19th century and stands out also because of its position near the Marina and the surrounding neighborhood. You can spot it from anywhere: its dome and clock tower, both from the 19th century, make it visible from every point. Have you looked up to find it above the rooftops?
Squa-squa! The building follows a Latin cross shape — with a longer central arm — and features a single nave with small side chapels along its perimeter. An intimate space, like a boat welcoming those who step aboard.
Kraak! At the end stands the main altar, topped by a marble edicule — a structure that frames and protects — where the wooden statue of Saint Joseph from the 18th century is kept. Above it, a shell bears the inscription “ITE AD JOSEPH”. Words that remain, like the sound of waves on the shore.
